The Saijoji Temple is a temple of the Soto sect and was founded during the Muromachi period in 1394 (Oei 1) by the Zen master Ryoan Emyo. It still has more than 4000 Monryu (branch schools) nationwide. Legend has it that after the death of Zen Master Ryoan, the ascetic monk Doryo, who had been engaged in the establishment of the temple, vowed “From here on, I will be the guardian deity of the Daiyuzan and save people”. Then he transformed himself into a Tengu and disappeared into the mountains. The locals call him "Mr. Doryo", and many wooden clogs on the temple grounds are dedicated to him. The temple complex has been repeatedly affected by fires, but there still are more than 30 buildings standing. The tomb of the Himeji lord Matsudaira Naomoto, who was also the grandson of Tokugawa Ieyasu, a pagoda that was built on the temple grounds at the end of the Edo period, and other important cultural assets still remain today. This temple ranks third in the entire Soto school temples next to Eihei-ji temple in Fukui Prefecture and Soji-ji temple in Tsurumi. There are many dedicated clogs on the temple grounds.
