Overview
A temple of the Jishu school of Buddhism. The huge stone monument on the temple grounds was erected by local volunteers in 1921 (Taisho 11) to honor the “public-spirited” village headman of Sekimoto-juku, Shimoda Hayato. During the early Edo period in 1659 (Manji 2), Shimoda Hayato made a direct appeal to Inaba Masanori, the feudal lord of the Odawara Domain at that time (and grandchild of Kasuga no Tsubone), to lower the heavy land taxes, but was sentenced to death instead. In addition, this temple is also the place where the “Kagenkan” teaching facility once was, the predecessor of the current Minamiashigara Elementary School.
