Overview

22珠明寺.JPG

A temple of the Rinzai school of Buddhism. This temple houses the Hokyointo pagoda of Uesugi Norizane, who was a shogunal deputy for the Kanto region during the Muromachi period (and the descendant of Uesugi Kenshin, a feudal lord of the Sengoku period). However, due to the fact that Norizane died in Nagato (now Yamaguchi Prefecture), it is believed to only be a memorial tower. In the adjacent Minamiashigara Sports Park, the well frames of horizontal wells have been reproduced. During the Edo period, farmers used them as shelters when the Sakawa river flooded.
