Overview
Ninomiya Kinjiro was an agricultural leader and philosopher born to a poor peasant family in Kayama (now Odawara) who lived during the late Edo period. Although he suffered the loss of the family farmlands to the flooding of the Sakawa river, he restored his household on his own, and then became a vassal of the shogun by reviving various villages and domains, including the Odawara Domain. Statues of Kinjiro have been installed in elementary schools all over the country, because was known to be a diligent learner. It is believed that the firewood he was carrying on his back was taken from Yasa Shibayama. Next to the seating stone that he supposedly used to rest on there is another statue of Kinjiro that was donated by local volunteers.
